Optical Systems
At Materion Corporation, we have extensive knowledge in the defense and science markets. We help our customers develop the structural components and mirror systems for optical applications ranging from air and space-borne surveillance and targeting optics, to astronomical telescopes.
BERYLLIUM AND ALBEMET® FOR OPTICAL SYSTEMS
We supply our customers with beryllium and AlBeMet® for use in numerous electro-optical applications. Beryllium has the highest specific heat of any metal and excellent thermal conductivity, making it an ideal material for optics’ applications.
AlBeMet® is a unique metal matrix composite (MMC) formed when beryllium is combined with pure aluminum. It is one of the easiest-to-machine MMCs and has its own unique properties.
Materion Corporation products are featured in the structural components and mirror systems used to construct air and space-borne high precision target designation, tracking and targeting optics such as the LANTIRN, Sniper, Arrowhead systems, as well as for the mirrors for NASA’s current Hubble Space Telescope and its future James Webb Space Telescope.
They are also featured in ground-based designation, tracking and targeting mirror systems like those on the VLT, M1A2 and M-60 tanks.
BERYLLIUM AND ALBEMET® ADVANTAGES
No other production materials provide the combination of properties like those found in pure beryllium metal and AlBeMet alloys for optical applications. Beryllium has excellent strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, which provide the light weight highly rigid structures that are essential for use in high precision optical components. The high thermal diffusivity also helps rapidly dissipate thermal transients, which allows precision optical systems to withstand temperature extremes and fluctuations.
Optical components manufactured from our beryllium metal and AlBeMet® alloys minimize the moving mass and allow increased scanning rates. The superior dimensional and thermal stability of these materials allow optical systems to maintain their structural integrity and, in turn, their optical performance over extended periods of time with extreme temperature fluctuations.
