Materion Corporation has served the appliance market with a multitude of materials and services, from the very early days when the Brush Performance Alloys’ materials provided groundbreaking improvements in the fatigue life of electrical relays and to the reliability of electrical connector terminals used in challenging environments as the world first integrated electrical systems designed into appliances.
Those original devices like relays and connectors continue to be used in prolific numbers to provide long life reliable control for many of the key functions of household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, microwave ovens and heating/cooling system thermostats. As appliances continue to incorporate ever more sophisticated electronics, our Microelectronics & Services business is providing a wide range of target materials and vacuum deposition chamber services to the semiconductor industry that provides IC and memory chips and other devices like LED lighting for virtually all appliances from coffee makers to complete household electronic security and appliance control systems.
When failure to operate is not an acceptable outcome, as in fire extinguisher systems that may rest dormant for the typical 50+ year life of a building, yet must operate immediately when the sensors detect a fire, designers rely upon the nickel beryllium alloys supplied by Brush Performance Alloys. Likewise, the oxygen respirator systems that firefighters depend upon for life support rely upon our copper beryllium pressure gauge components. In addition, our Brush Performance Alloys business has enabled appliances to be more environmentally friendly. A large application for beryllium copper is in switches particularly in Europe where appliance design is more eco-conscious. European washing machines have more water level sensors/switches to minimize water use. Driers spin at higher speeds and use more safety interlock switches. Cook tops are smaller; the temperature controller environments are hotter; this requires the high performance of beryllium nickel springs. We are starting to see this trend take root in North America.
