Aerospace
Materion Corporation has over 30 years of experience designing, inventing and commercializing alloys that have helped advance the aerospace industry.
The Solution
This experience has evolved into Materion Corporation products that provide the best margin of safety for aircrafts as well as the best economic value for aircraft operators. These Materion products include:
- Alloy 25
- M25
- ToughMet®
- BrushBronze® 95510
Alloy 25
Materion Corporation’s patented Omega-process hot worked copper beryllium Alloy 25 AT rod and tube, and cold worked Alloy 25HT rod afford the following benefits:
- Corrosion resistance
- Exhibit stable properties over the wide range of temperatures encountered during a flight
- Finest and most uniform grain size available in any bearing or bushing material
- Highest specific strength, allowing components to be fabricated not only to smaller dimensions but also to the absolute lowest intrinsic weight
- Highest tensile and fatigue strength available in a non-galling bearing and bushing material
- Outstanding wear resistance when properly lubricated
We also offer screw machinable cold drawn copper beryllium Alloy M25H rod and wire, which possess the following characteristics:
- Highest strength and conductivity of any copper-based machinable rod or wire
- Machined to fine dimension and detail while in the cold drawn condition, then subsequently age hardened using a simple aging process to produce superior hardness and strength (unlike other competitive materials that obtain their strength from cold drawing only)
ToughMet® 3AT
When the superior strength of Omega copper beryllium is not required, ToughMet® 3AT is an excellent solution. This copper-nickel-tin alloy possesses the following qualities:
- Delivers superior performance and non-galling durability when lubricated, operating in contact with HVOF coated steels and titanium alloys
- Exhibits stable properties over the wide range of temperatures encountered during flight
- Operates at 50% lower friction and up to 10 times longer life without galling when mated with other metals
- Operates safely for an extended period of time in the event of lubrication failure
BrushBronze® 9551
Finally, BrushBronze® 95510, a widely-used nickel aluminum bronze alloy manufactured using our patented EquaCast® continuous casting process, can be described as follows:
- Exhibits a finer and more uniform grain size, and a greater tensile, yield and fatigue strength compared to other nickel aluminum bronzes
- Meets the properties of the hot worked version of this alloy system
- Offers moderate specific strength and is economical to use when properly lubricated for low-stress environments
- Provides cost advantages, compared to AMS 4640 solid rod, due to availability in long lengths of tubing
The End Result
Materion Corporation alloys can be found in the following end use products:
- Compression fit airframe fasteners
- Connectors in electrical and electronic systems
- Door and hatch hinges, internal components and actuators
- Landing gears and brakes
- Various hydraulic and auxiliary power system components, and much more
Aerospace Alloy Benefits
Some of the benefits of using Materion Corporation alloys in aerospace applications include:
- Extended service life between required maintenance Improved aircraft fuel efficiency
- Increased available cargo weight
- Reduced aircraft weight
