ToughMet® and BrushForm® Copper Nickel Tin Alloys

ToughMet® and BrushForm® Copper Nickel Tin Alloys

When it comes to unique technological capabilities in metallurgy, Materion Brush Performance Alloys proves again with its copper nickel tin alloys why we are the first choice for customers worldwide.

The properties of Materion Brush Performance Alloys’ high performance, spinodally-hardened copper nickel tin alloys – ToughMet® and BrushForm® - provide many advantages in demanding end-use applications ranging from electric connectors, switches and sensors to industrial bearings like heavy equipment transmission thrust washers.

Copper Nickel Tin Alloy Advantages

BrushForm® strip alloys are high-performance, heat treatable spinodal copper nickel tin alloys designed to provide optimal formability and strength characteristics in conductive spring applications such as electronic connectors, switches, and sensors.

ToughMet® is another spinodally hardened copper nickel tin alloy that provides high strength, corrosion resistance, lubricity and wear resistance under severe loading conditions. In comparative sleeve bearing tests against a hardened steel shaft, ToughMet® showed unprecedented performance for a metallic bearing material.

  • The PV limit of ToughMet® is more than twice that of most conventional bearing materials.
  • ToughMet® anti-galling alloys are lead and beryllium free and show excellent corrosion and stress corrosion cracking resistance in sea water, chlorides and sulfides.
  • ToughMet® provides machinability at least 3 times that of conventional tool steels.

Forms and types of copper nickel tin alloys

Materion Brush Performance Alloy manufactures copper nickel tin alloys under two brand names:

  • ToughMet® –  ToughMet 3 contains 15% nickel, 8% tin, balance copper. ToughMet 3 is available primarily in rod and tube as well as a variety of cast shapes.
  • BrushForm® 158 and 96 are strip alloys, with strength and formability approaching high strength copper beryllium, available in both pre-heat treated (mill hardened) and heat treatable (age hardenable) forms
