Designers have discovered Materion Ceramics E-Materials and are using these materials in laser bars and as heat sinks in charge coupled devices (CCD) such as cameras.   E-Materials, a metal matrix composite (MMC), offers a light weight and thermal conductivity solution providing superior performance over traditional materials such as aluminum silicon carbide (AlSiC).

In laser diodes, the active medium is a semiconductor similar to that found in a light-emitting diode. The most common type of laser diode is formed from a p-n junction and powered by injected electric current.  Among other uses, laser diodes are found in optical fiber systems, compact disc (CD) players, laser printers, remote-control devices and intrusion detection systems.

Materion Beryllium Oxide

Unique thermal and electrical properties make BeO the material of choice for a wide range of Photonics and Laser applications. BeO components can typically be found in lasers with the most demanding applications such as in medical devices for DNA analyses, where the highest beam quality or output power are required. BeO has traditionally been found in laser bores which are the main component of a gas laser. New applications for BeO substrates include laser diode sub-mounts where standard BeO and BW1000 provide beneficial properties, including the thermal conductivity and surface requirements necessary for these demanding applications. BeO is also increasingly used as a waveguide in CO2 lasers which are used for industrial marking of items such as integrated circuits and PC boards. New photonics applications are also developing in E-materials, which can now be found in laser bars and as heat sinks in CCD cameras. Light weight and thermal conductivity give these metal matrix materials an edge over traditional materials such as aluminum silicon carbide (AlSiC).
