Solar Energy & Photovoltaic
The Market
At Materion Corporation, we strive to lead the way in all of the markets we serve. Our materials and systems help improve end-use performance in the solar energy market.
Materials for High Performance Solar Energy Devices
As global focus on energy conservation and emission reductions continues to grow, many new applications are discovering the unique capabilities Beryllium Oxide materials provides in the generation of energy. Utilizing BeO products from Materion Ceramics in the design of solar cells provides a lower cost solution to harnessing electricity from the power of the sun, thereby, reducing our dependency on fossil fuels and helping our environment.
Understanding the needs of the thin film solar market, Materion manufactures a comprehensive material list in forms suitable for evaporative, sputtering, printing and close-space sublimation deposition techniques. These forms include granules, tablets, planar and cylindrical sputtering targets and finely divided powder. Processes are in place to recycle materials, adding value while reducing waste.
Material options include:
- Back contact materials
- Barrier and anti-reflective coating materials
- Cadmium stannate, Cd2SnO4
- Cadmium sulfide, CdS
- Cadmium telluride, CdTe
- Cu-In-Ga-Se, alloys, binaries, ternaries and quaternaries
- Gold and other precious metals for concentrator devices
- Large area coating materials
- Silver (Ag) and silver alloys for high reflective mirror coatings
- Transparent conductive oxide materials
- Zinc oxide (ZnO), zinc oxide-based mixtures and compounds
These high purity material options can enable high throughput and yield high efficiency devices. Materials offered are available in custom compositions and configurations.
High-End Systems for Back-End Solar Applications
We provide both copper and aluminum-based composite systems for use as interconnect materials for photovoltaic systems. Our copper-based systems offer specialty clad composites, with clad layers such as aluminum, lead-free and leaded solders, high conductivity /low stress layers for applications like junction box connections. Additionally, our solder clad aluminum-based systems offer surface-mount attachments for thin film interconnects.
The composite systems are composed of custom combinations of ribbons and foils, ranging from 2 to 152 millimeters wide with thicknesses as low as 40 microns. Coatings are available in thicknesses of 1 - 15 microns.
Materion also offers flexible conductive films and moisture barrier materials for thin film photovoltaics. Our roll-to-roll film processing provides high volumes of light weight, flexible materials for optimum performance.
NEXT GENERATION INTERCONNECT MATERIALS
Technical Materials provides next generation interconnect materials to the solar marketplace. The thin foil composite ribbons are especially suited to the demands of new thin film designs. Other configurations support crystalline, concentrator, and j-box designs.
Why Materion Corporation?
Eliminate solder pre forms or paste and reduce labor and assembly costs with our solder coatings. We offer thin (less than 25 microns) and thick (up to 0.5 millimeter) coatings of soldered tin silver alloys, tin lead alloys, pure tin and controlled intermetallic alloys.
