Lapping

Lapping of a BeO Substrate is necessary when either the thickness of the material is too thin to supply as an AS-FIRED part or the customer’s specification for flatness or thickness tolerance is tighter than an AS-FIRED material can meet.

Occasionally a rougher surface finish is required from the customer for some applications. To obtain a rougher surface finish than an AS-FIRED part (15 CLA max), the material has to be lapped which can bring the surface finish up to 25 – 64 CLA.

The BeO substrate is double-sided lapped to the desired thickness or the desired flatness. Material is then clean fired to remove any possible contaminates. Material can either be Materion Ceramics material or customer supplied BeO material.
