Materion Electrofusion History
Materion Electrofusion’s pioneering history began in 1966 as Electrofusion Corporation. We quickly attained our position as a world-renowned leader in the fabrication and joining of specialty metals and materials - materials such as aluminum, copper, Kovar®, Monel®, stainless steel, titanium, and, of course, beryllium.
The Electrofusion Corporation was acquired by Brush Wellman in 1990. Three years later the division’s name was changed to Brush Wellman-Applications Development Center. As a newly formed Brush Wellman division, we continued to provide specialized products and fabrication services to various markets, including aerospace, avionics, computer disk drives, X-ray window assemblies, ultrahigh purity beryllium foil and the fabrication of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) assemblies and components.
Late in 1994, we made the decision to refocus our efforts on the beryllium X-ray window and UHV markets. Responsibilities that did not fall into these categories were transferred to other Brush Wellman facilities or select business partners. The division was re-named Electrofusion Products to reflect a return to our roots.
Materion Electrofusion Today
Today, Materion Electrofusion focuses on beryllium X-ray window and ultra high vacuum (UHV) products that have been an integral part of our business since the 1970s. The unit also offers electron beam (EB) welding, vacuum furnace brazing and waterjet cutting services, as well as engineering support to help our customers take advantage of these processes. In addition, Materion Electrofusion offers Truextent® brand acoustic beryllium products, such as speaker domes and microphone transducers.
Our parent company, Brush Wellman, newly re-named Materion, has been a central source of beryllium metal products since 1931, with its own ore reserves and mining capabilities. Our corporate structure now allows us to process raw materials from extraction through refinement. This unique capability positions us as the only fully-integrated source for beryllium X-ray windows and vacuum hardware for the analytical, medical and scientific communities.
