Acoustics

Manufacturers of professional and audiophile class transducers constantly seek materials that will improve system sensitivity, efficiency and overall performance. Beryllium has the unique combination of physical properties that make it ideal for use in direct radiators, compression drivers, ribbon drivers and even microphones.

Truextent® Brand Beryllium

Materion Corporation’s Truextent brand acoustic beryllium is a pure beryllium foil available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, either as a simple dome or ribbon pre-formed component, or as a complete electromechanical assembly. Truextent brand acoustic beryllium exhibits the unique combination of acoustic properties not found in any other structural material. Due to the special foil rolling process, Truextent brand acoustic beryllium has the proper ductility to allow us to fabricate everything from simple tweeter domes, to complex shapes that include half-roll and/or diamond-pattern integrated surrounds.

As the world’s leading supplier of pure beryllium for acoustic applications, we also offer a line-up of complete compression driver diaphragm assemblies engineered to fit the majority of existing large format compression driver motors. Other diaphragm assemblies are available on a project basis for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of professional and audiophile equipment.

Designed with Truextent brand acoustic beryllium domes, polymer surrounds and aluminum wire edge wound voice coils, our compression driver diaphragm assemblies provide superior power handling capability, reliability and clarity of sound. Acoustic beryllium has the highest stiffness-to-density ratio of all commercial dome materials. This ratio allows the diaphragm to have a low overall moving mass, which greatly improves responsiveness, while remaining rigid over a wide frequency range and thus eliminating the “breakup” associated with the mechanical deformation of traditional dome materials at their resonate frequencies.

The voice coils are made in-house of pure aluminum wire to minimize mass of the moving system. These voice coils have less mass than copper-clad wire, and superior heat transfer capability over copper-clad wire.

The suspension is constructed from a proprietary polymer, rather than a metal one piece dome and surround, which enhances the reliability and eliminates fatigue stresses that destroy traditional diaphragm assemblies. This unique polymer surround was designed to provide excellent dampening of the voice coil and diaphragm for smooth, low distortion, linear output with excellent transient response.

While our standard off-the-shelf diaphragm assemblies are designed to fit the majority of existing compression driver motor geometries, we also have the engineering and manufacturing capability to supply full-custom versions for OEMs.
