We offer metal cladding for fuel cell systems that allow our customers to produce clean, efficient and reliable electric power. Metal cladding is the metallurgical bonding of multiple layers of ductile alloys to optimize bulk properties and surface characteristics to components such as high-efficiency stamped and formed flow channels.

Our clad metals are designed to provide combinations of desired properties, such as corrosion resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity, mechanical integrity and cost effectiveness. They can be found in applications like membranes, end plates, seals and corrosion caps.

We offer a virtually limitless selection of alloy combinations:

  • Niobium, tantalum, titanium, proprietary alloys and noble alloys, such as gold, palladium, platinum and silver, are available for surface layers
  • For substrates and intermediate layers, stainless steels, copper alloys, aluminum and titanium are offered

The need for nickel underlayers is eliminated, and up to 12 multiple layers with layer thicknesses ranging from microns to millimeters can be bonded together.

Traditional Metals, Solid Alloys and Coating Techniques

Traditional metal options such as solid alloys, plating and coating techniques cannot compare to clad metals. The selection of solid alloys often requires a compromise between cost, physical properties and corrosion resistance. Plating is limited to certain materials and can experience a higher failure rate from inherent issues such as porosity and porous, brittle surfaces, not to mention high costs.

An attractive alternative can be provided by Materion Corporation in the form of clad metals, which are characterized by nickel-free surfaces, pore-free surface layers, clad layers as thin as one micron, barrier interlayers where desirable, and selective inlay stripes. Additionally, they afford high formability while remaining cost-effective.
