Lithium-Ion Cathode Cell Connections

Challenge of Application:

Li Ion battery chemistries often force designers to join copper and aluminum.  Connecting copper (anode) to aluminum (cathode) using welding techniques is difficult due to the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds.

Materion Solutions:

a)  Cu-Al dovetail strip enables copper-to-copper and aluminum-to-aluminum connections in either tab or bussbar designs.  This system allows for full penetration welding without mixing copper and aluminum in the weld.

b)  Welding aluminum to soft aluminum is a very robust process.  Inlaying aluminum into copper or other substrates allows for optimizing conductivity and allows for broader design options using either ultrasonics or high-speed laser technologies.
