To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of aluminum iodide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded. Aluminum compounds have many commercial uses and are commonly found in industry. Many of these materials are active chemically and thus exhibit dangerous toxic and reactive properties. Inhalation of fine aluminum oxide particles is associated with Shaver's disease. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition) Prolonged absorption of iodides may produce "iodism" which is manifested by skin rash, running nose, headache and irritation of mucous memebranes. In severe cases, the skin may show pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters. Weakness, anemia, loss of weight and general depression may occur. Generally very soluble in water and easily absorbed into the body.(Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition) INHALATION: Acute: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. May cause irritation of the upper respiratory system, nose, lacrimation, headache and tight chest. Chronic: May cause pneumonoconiosis. INGESTION: Acute: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. May cause chemical burns to the mouth, gastric irritation, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Chronic: May cause gastritis, degeneration of the liver and kidneys, growth retardation, anemia and spasms. SKIN: Acute: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. Chronic: May cause rashes, pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters. EYE: Acute: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. Chronic: May cause visual impairment, including blindness. TARGET ORGANS: May affect the respiratory system, liver, kidneys, skin and eyes. |

SECTION VII - PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE |
| STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED | |
Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII-control measures. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Scoop or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust. . |
| WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD | |
Dispose of in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. . |

| WORK/HYGIENIC/MAINTENANCE PRACTICES | |
Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Handle in a controlled, inert atmosphere. Minimize exposure of cadmium by local exhaust and enclosing process if/when possible. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Shower and change clothes at the end of workshift. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. . |
