Thermal Imaging
US defense companies initially developed thermal Imaging cameras for use in military applications. The initial technologies for thermal imaging relied on cryogenically cooled IR detectors, which were expensive. Over the past 10 years, commercial applications for thermal imaging cameras have been increasing primarily due to the use of uncooled microbolometers, which are less expensive. As a result, IR camera prices have significantly dropped in the thermography business allowing the use of IR cameras to expand. IR camera cost reduction is expected to continue through 2015 in thermography with continuously increasing market volume.
Materion Barr Precision Optics & Thin Film Coatings has recognized that the need for IR thermography cameras will continue to increase and has put on the necessary resources and capacity to keep up with demand. Our coating facility offers optical coatings on a variety of Infrared substrates used in the SWIR and LWIR. Typical materials coated include Germanium, Silicon, Sapphire, ZnS, ZnSe and GaAs. We also offer low temperature coatings on Chalcogenide materials. Our coating chambers employ planetary-based motion for even coating distribution on flat and shaped optics. Our chambers also support high volume production at an effective cost.
