ALLOYS FOR OIL AND GAS
Materion Performance Alloys engineers a range of specialty alloys that have been proven in the challenging environments of onshore and offshore oil and gas applications, including drill bit bearings, wellhead control systems, ROVs, directional drilling tools, power cables and sucker rod couplings.
These materials outperform other high-strength alloys, extending the reach and accuracy of oil and gas drilling tools and increasing the reliability of well control, completion and production.

TOUGHMET® SUCKER ROD COUPLINGS CHANGE THE GAME: FEWER WORKOVERS & INCREASED PRODUCTION
Since 2016, 28 operators have installed sucker rod couplings made of ToughMet® 3 TS95 alloy in more than 900 oil wells located in the Bakken and Permian Basin to mitigate failures caused by coupling-on-tubing wear. In addition to fewer costly workovers, engineers monitoring these wells reported unanticipated performance and well efficiency improvements. To quantify the additional benefits, several operators ran field trials specifically to assess the improvements in well performance after the installation of ToughMet couplings.

Alloy 25 provides extraordinary strength with high electrical and thermal conductivity. It offers high material strength even in large cross sections and the best thermal and electrical conductivity capability available in a high-strength copper alloy. Alloy 25 can be age hardened to achieve property combinations that meet individual application requirements.
TOUGHMET® 3 TS ALLOY
ToughMet 3 alloy tempers are wrought, spinodally hardened copper alloys that provide high-impact strength and crack-propagation resistance in rugged service environments. ToughMet alloys retain their strength at elevated temperatures and resist most sour environments. Some tempers combine high levels of fracture toughness with strength.
TOUGHMET® ALLOY INNOVATIONS FOR OIL & GAS
ToughMet 3 was originally developed for oil and gas applications, and it continues to fuel innovative solutions that enhance performance, production and profitability for our customers. Here are products we've just recently introduced:
- ToughMet 3 TS 130 alloy - a new temper of Materion’s high strength, spinodally hardened copper-nickel-tin alloy, offers 10 percent greater ductility and yield strength of 140 ksi. This new temper can handle more strain in directional drilling tools, without galling or corrosion.
- ToughMet 3 Alloy Large Diameter Bar - offers very consistent properties throughout cross sections of the material – in diameters that more than double ToughMet size ranges – for greater versatility in more oil and gas applications, including larger drilling tool parts.
ToughMet Sucker Rod Couplings - more than double the life of couplings and production tubing.
