BERYLLIUM METAL RECYCLING AND RECLAMATION

Copper-beryllium scrap that is not contaminated with other metals such as iron, aluminum, cadmium, lead etc. is recyclable by the primary producers and other recyclers. It is economically and environmentally advisable for the manufacturer or a recycler to segregate copper-beryllium scrap from other metals for recycle.

ACCEPTABLE TYPES OF ALLOYS FOR RECYCLING

Beryllium Alloys

Copper beryllium and beryllium-free scrap can be readily recycled. All material must meet Materion BWA-70 and BWA-76 specifications.

Beryllium Metal

Pure beryllium and aluminum-beryllium machined chips, solids and components from defense and aerospace platforms. All material must meet Materion BWA 68 specifications.

CLEANLINESS - All materials purchased under BWA 68 specification are to be free from contamination from other metals, plastics, cloths, paper and other materials. All drums of machine chips should have excess cutting fluid drained from them.

RECYCLING SPECIFICATIONS FOR ACCEPTABLE SCRAP FORMS

Solid scrap including bar ends, punching, sheet, strip, coil or other solid form or turnings, borings, scalping. Maximum size is 25” x 48” (635 mm x 1219 mm). No minimums or maximums.

Fine turnings and sawing scrap are not acceptable. Scrap with excessive oily residue is not acceptable. Will be determined on the date the purchase order is issued.

RECYCLING SPECIFICATIONS FOR X-RAY WINDOWS, UHV WINDOWS AND TRUEXTENT BERYLLIUM

X-ray windows, UHV windows, and Truextent® genuine beryllium acoustic components will be accepted. The beryllium must be clean and must not be attached to anything, including frames, assemblies and compression drivers.

DELIVERY CONTAINER SPECIFICATIONS

Dry, clean scrap may be packaged in gaylords (no plastic liners), 55-gallon metal drums (no plastic liners - 2,000 lb. maximum) or fiber drums with the purchase order number, weight (gross, net, and tare) clearly marked on the outside. Containers must have lids or shrink wrap to ensure scrap is intact throughout the shipping process. All packaging must be secure and structurally sound to support the material during transit and off-loading.

SORTING AND SEGREGATING BERYLLIUM SCRAP FOR RECYCLING

Materials will be sorted and segregated by material types and/or grade (i.e. Alloy 25, 190, 165, 17460, ToughMet® alloys, MoldMAX®alloys etc.). Mixed alloys may be rejected and will be returned at the shipper’s expense.

PACKAGING AND LABELING REQUIREMENTS

The purchase order number must be listed on the outside of each drum or container. Gross, tare (including the lid, retainer ring etc.) and net weights should be listed on each drum. A description of the types of chips, (e.g., dry beryllium, oily AlBeMet® composite etc.) should be included either on the packing slip and/or the drum. Drums should be on pallets, with a maximum of four drums per pallet.

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR RECYCLING

The following documentation needs to be included with the shipment or by mail to arrive no later than the day of receipt of the shipment.

(1) A packing list including the net, tare and gross weights of the material shipped, the purchase order number, and identification of each drum or container as marked on the drum or container.

(2) A Statement of Compliance signed by a responsible agent of the vendor which includes (as a minimum): The material included in the shipment meets the requirements of Materion’s BWA-68 Metallic Beryllium-Containing Scrap Material Specification. The specification number and revision must be included in the shipment. The purchase order number, and if applicable the release number.
