Dovetail Clad Metal For Lower Electrical Impedance and High Temperature Stability
By cladding copper to aluminum strip with several points of connections a new materials solution was born: Dovetail Clad metal. The increased surface contact of copper and aluminum provide many advantages for Dovetail Clad metal. When used to connect cells in a battery pack, this material is longer lasting, the joints are stronger and it offers lower electrical impedance than existing materials.
We can make Dovetail Clad metal into a bus bar or a lead tab material. The lower electrical impedance results in lower levels of heat for battery packs in HEV and EV. That lower level of electrical resistance results in a cooler and safer battery pack. The higher strength of the joints make this connector material ideal for the vibrations that cars experience on the road.

The Materion copper-aluminum solution addresses the cell designer’s challenge of connecting dissimilar metal terminals to their bussing systems. While the attachment within the cell stays the same, the laser attachment of the bussing system to the terminals outside of the cell is dramatically simplified. This solution eliminates high-cost manual assembly while ensuring reliability and performance.
