Materion offers advanced, ultrasonic and conventional machining capabilities with state-of-the-art equipment to create complex and custom designed technical ceramics parts. We work closely with our customers to optimize their applications and provide design optimization for manufacturability.
Our newest piece of equipment, a five-axis ultrasonic machining center, enables us to create complex beryllium oxide (BeO) and alumina (Al2O3) ceramics parts at a lower cost for customers across a range of industries, including electronics, aerospace, and defense. Ultrasonic milling is the ideal solution when tube or laser bore designs have tighter tolerances on the ID than can be achieved by pressing.

We also offer conventional and laser machining services for technical ceramics, including cutting, milling, grinding, and drilling.
CNC Surface Grinding: Used for designs with extremely tight tolerances—as low as 0.00008’’, 80 millionths—which can only be achieved by surface grinding the material or to add in complex features such as grooves, notches, chamfers, radii, and profiles.
OD/ID Grinding: Used when a design has a tight tolerance on the OD and/or ID profiling than can be met by pressing alone. The part is OD and/or ID ground to meet specifications. This type of machining can also apply any form, including threads, to tolerances as low as 0.0001’’.
CNC Milling: Used primarily to machine green ceramic to near net shape, reducing the amount of post-fired machining. This function can also be used to mill in pockets and grooves.
Cutting services for beryllium-based ceramics and alloys, including dicing diamond saw, laser and waterjet cutting.
Metallization services to increase performance, including screen-printing, roll coating and air brushing.
