AlBeMet® 162 ALUMINUM BERYLLIUM METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE

Materion Beryllium & Composites offers AlBeMet®, an Aluminum-Beryllium metal matrix composite which combines the high modulus and low density characteristics of Beryllium with the fabrication and mechanical property behaviors of Aluminum. It has a much lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than aluminum while having a higher thermal conductivity.

AlBeMet® is a powder-based product and is consolidated by one of three methods: Hot Isostatic Pressed (HIP), Extruded (EXT) and Rolled Sheet (RS). AlBeMet® has different grades based on the percent beryllium in the mix and the consolidation process. Our AlBeMet® 162 product line is the most popular.

ALUMINUM BERYLLIUM HOT ISOSTATIC PRESSED (AM162-H) STANDARD COMPOSITION

AM162-H is 62% commercially pure Beryllium and 38% commercially pure Aluminum. AM162-H is produced as powder and consolidated using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP).
Available Configurations 

  • Regular Stock Block - Approximate size 15" x 20" x 43"
  • Special block - rectangular or round, sized to meet customer requirements
  • Near Net Shapes - Designed per customer part requirements

ALUMINUM BERYLLIUM EXTRUDED (AM162-EXT) STANDARD COMPOSITION

AM162-EXT is 62% commercially pure Beryllium and 38% commercially pure Aluminum. AM 162 EXT is produced as powder and consolidated using Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) and then extruding.
Available Configurations     

  • Rod - Up to 4" diameter
  • Bar - Up to 1.5" x 8.5" cross section

ALUMINUM BERYLLIUM ROLLED SHEET (AM162-RS) STANDARD COMPOSITION

AM162-RS is 62% commercially pure Beryllium and 38% commercially pure Aluminum. AM 162 RS is produced as powder and consolidated using Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP), extruding and then rolling.
Available Configurations 
Rolled sheet thicknesses are made to order for customer sizes
Common width and thickness are as follows:

  • 0.020" to 0.063" thick - 20" x 42"
  • 0.064" to 0.125" thick - 20" x 28"
  • 0.126" to 0.188" thick - 20" x 24"
  • 0.189" to 0.250" thick - 14" x 24"
  • 0.251" to 0.300" thick - 12" x 24"

Because of its excellent thermal expansion and conductivity properties along with low weight, AlBeMet® is used extensively in avionic, satellite and commercial heat sink applications.

MACHINABILITY AND FABRICATION ADVANTAGE

When compared to metal matrix and organic composites, Materion’s AlBeMet® metal matrix composites are simpler to use and easier to fabricate. AlBeMet® machining, fabrication and coating are similar to the same processes done for aluminum.
