Materion offers a family of beryllium oxide (BeO or beryilla) ceramics that meet the demanding requirements of smaller components exposed to high ambient temperatures, but difficult to air or liquid cool. Our BW beryllia engineered ceramics are our highest quality advanced BeO ceramics that address all the needs for reliable thermal conductivity.
ADVANTAGES OF BW 1000® AND BW3250® TECHNICAL CERAMICS
BeO ceramic can be nine times more thermally conductive than AlN ceramic. When BeO is compared to AlN, it has a thermal conductivity of up to 325 W/(m•K), meaning beryllia can be up to 80 percent more thermally conductive than AlN. In addition, BeO as an oxide ceramic is more chemically stable than AlN ceramics in environments containing oxidizing chemicals.
Our beryllium oxide advanced ceramics are available in four grades, two of which are: BW 1000® and BW3250® ceramics. Both are 99.5% pure BeO and deliver improved performance for circuits and applications generating high heat. BeO has a lower dielectric constant of 6.7 compared to AlN's 9.7 dielectric constant. BW ceramics offer electrical resistivity and dielectric strength equivalent to competitive materials.
BW 1000 ceramic offers the highest flexural strength (MOR) of all our beryilla grades. When small components require great strength, BW 1000 ceramic is the optimum choice. This ceramic material is ideal for very small, fragile parts that will endure high levels of stress during the life cycle of the product. BW3250 BeO ceramic offers higher thermal conductivity than BW 1000 ceramic, but with lower flexural strength.

USES AND APPLICATIONS OF BW BEO ADVANCED CERAMICS
To meet the requirements of a range of applications, the BW family of high-performance BeO ceramic parts are manufactured with various techniques including dry pressing, hot pressing, isostatic pressing and extrusion.
BW 1000 ceramics offer the highest tensile strength of all of our beryllium oxide ceramics. This characteristic allows this ceramic to be made into small components in high heat applications including components for medical equipment, military applications, electronic components and traveling wave tubes (TWT).
BW3250 ceramics provide the highest thermally conductive of all our grades of BeO. We are the only company in the world that offers this higher thermally conductive version. BW3250 ceramic is guaranteed up to 325W/mK, but it is capable of running around 350 W/mK. The many uses of BW3250 ceramics include:
