Materion Employee Honored with Invitation to NACE International Committee

Performance Alloys' Bill Nielsen to serve on committee with oversight of the panel that governs the international standards for oil and gas materials. 

 

Materion Bill NielsenA career lifetime devoted to finding metallurgical solutions to the vexing problem of corrosion in tough, or "sour" end-use operating conditions, has landed Bill Nielsen, Product/Marketing Director - Bulk Products, Performance Alloys, the honor of a prestigious assignment on a task force  for NACE International, the worldwide corrosion authority.  Specifically, Bill will be serving on the Corrosion Prevention and Control for Oil and Gas Production, Petroleum Refining, and Gas Processing Industries Task Group 299.

Materials used in the oil and gas industry must be able to provide reliable, sustained performance in rugged, complex and corrosive environments.  Materion provides a range of alloys that meet corrosion resistant requirements in onshore and offshore exploration, drilling, completion and production equipment.

Established in 1943 by 11 corrosion engineers from the pipeline industry as the "National Association of Corrosion Engineers," NACE International has become the global leader in developing corrosion prevention and control standards, certification and education. The members of NACE International include engineers, as well as numerous other professionals working in a range of areas related to corrosion control.  Materion has been a long-standing NACE member and a technical contributor.

As part of his five-year commitment, Bill will vote on any changes proposed to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.  Bill is the first Materion employee to have been asked to serve on such a NACE committee.  Bill's decades-long pursuit of solutions to cracking in steel and other metals used within oil and gas infrastructure began when he was a student at Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University and has continued on at Materion in the invention, patenting, commercial development and ongoing success of ToughMet®.
