In 2014 Materion Technical Materials (MTM) celebrated its 40-year anniversary of Electron Beam Welding! Based in Rhode Island, the business was known as Technical Materials Inc. (or TMI) before being rebranded in 2011 along with other businesses into Materion Corporation (NYSE: MTRN). Specializing in customized high-performance metal strip products, TMI was founded in 1968 with the focus of making gold inlay clad materials for the telecommunications industry. In 1974 TMI commissioned its first reel-to-reel electron beam welder to support electrical switching products, welding silver contact materials onto copper spring alloys. Today Materion Technical Materials operates four electron beam welders, making it one of the world’s leading producers of engineered welded strip. Welded products are manufactured for a wide range of industries from automotive electronics to implantable leads for medical devices. Committed to continual investments in technology, the latest welding line was installed to expand capacity for heavy gauge reel-to-reel welding. The welder will support production of Shunt Resistor materials, which are commonly used to sense electrical currents in automotive battery management systems and residential smart electricity meters. Decades of experience welding resistor products also lead to the development of a line of precision Copper-Manganese-Nickel resistor alloys, R270 and R280, which are cast in a partnership between MTM and the Materion Performance Alloy group in Lorain and Elmore, Ohio. This collaboration allows Materion to support the growing need for high performance welded resistors and provide our customers with the best quality materials at the lowest cost.
