MATERIALS PROCESSING CAPABILITIES for specialty applications

Materion offers unique, proprietary materials processing capabilities to serve our customers around the globe. We match our industry-leading technologies to our customers’ applications to optimize material performance and specialized fabrication.

BERYLLIUM PRODUCTS PROCESSING

Beryllium optical parts

Cold Isostatic Pressing

  • Used for parts with more complex geometry, CIP preforms blanks close to net shape directly from beryllium powders and produces the desired blank shape with excellent definition of detail.

Simple beryllium shapes

Hot Isostatic Pressing

  • Used for parts having simple shapes, HIP consolidates beryllium powders in sealed, vacuum-degassed containers to nearly 100% density, resulting in a blank that is the same shape as the container.

Beryllium rods

Vacuum Hot Pressing

  • The most commonly used beryllium pressing technique, VHP results in a uniform, fully-dense, fine-grained beryllium. Through VHP, it is possible to produce a variety of beryllium grades with differing characteristics for many divergent applications.

CLAD METALS PROCESSING

Strips of copper clad metal

Specialty cladding

  • Specialty cladding combines dissimilar metals to optimize their bulk and surface properties. These combinations solve electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical or other physical performance challenges not achievable with a single material.

Copper to aluminum clad strip

Overlay Cladding

  • Joins dissimilar metals by applying high pressure without brazing alloys or adhesives which allows us to custom engineer materials for specific applications.

Copper strip clad with inlay

Inlay Cladding

  • Flexibility allowing the designer to incorporate diverse properties, such as weldability, corrosion resistance, and conductivity, at different locations.

Electron beam welding

Electron Beam Welding and Zone Annealing

  • A continuous process that uses focused electron beam energy to weld or heat and soften very exact locations across the metal strip.

Electroplated stamped component

Electroplating

  • Enables thin layers of metals to be deposited onto coils of base metals or pre-stamped parts. Reel-to-reel electroplating technology provides precise edge definition and location tolerance.

Continuous Profiled Strip

  • Uses reel-to-reel milling for unlimited design possibilities for use in high speed stamping.

TECHNICAL CERAMICS PROCESSING

Industrial grinding of a metal plate

  Cold Isostatic Pressing

  • Used for parts with more complex geometry, CIP preforms blanks close to net shape directly from beryllium powders and produces the desired blank shape with excellent definition of detail.

Laser cutting

Ultrasonic Drilling

  • For customer tube or laser bore design with tighter tolerances than can be achieved by pressing.

Industrial grinding

OD/ID Grinding

  • Used when a customer’s design has a tighter tolerance on the OD and/or ID profiling than can be met by pressing alone.

CNC Milling Industrial

CNC Milling

  • Used primarily to machine green (unfired) ceramic to near net shape.
