DELIVERING HIGH-PERFORMANCE ALLOYS FOR THE OIL & GAS MARKET
Oil and gas customers around the world have come to rely on Materion to provide alloy materials that meet the demands of onshore and offshore exploration, drilling, completion and production. Our solutions deliver excellent quality, consistent reliability and unique property combinations to make them the materials of choice for the oil & gas market.
PROVIDING HIGH-PERFORMANCE MATERIALS FOR OIL & GAS APPLICATIONS
Materion addresses the oil & gas industry’s problems of corrosion, wear and galling with unique materials solutions, offering required characteristics such as:
- High strength and fatigue strength at elevated temperatures
- Anti-galling for non-magnetic drilling
- Cavitation resistance
- Chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance
- High performance photovoltaic connectors
For shale wells operating on artificial lift, we engineered ToughMet® 3 Sucker Rod Couplings to eliminate production interruptions caused by coupling-on-tubing wear. When used in problematic wells, the couplings can save operators nearly $100,000 per well per year.
Read our new oil and gas case study to see how our team of experts worked with a customer to analyze a competing material’s failure in a valve used for drill stem testing. The analysis also includes a comparison of the competing material to our Alloy 25.

ToughMet Sucker Rod Coupling - Fewer Workovers & Increased Production
Since 2016, 35 operators have installed sucker rod couplings made of ToughMet® 3 TS95 alloy in more than 1000 oil wells located in the Bakken and Permian Basin to mitigate failures caused by coupling-on-tubing wear. In addition to fewer costly workovers, engineers monitoring these wells reported unanticipated performance and well efficiency improvements. To quantify the additional benefits, several operators ran field trials specifically to assess the improvements in well performance after the installation of ToughMet couplings.
