TIGHTER CLEARANCES WITH LOW FRICTION

When used for bearings, thrust washers and valve guides, ToughMet alloy maintains tight clearances longer than self-lubricating materials that have to wear in order to supply lubricant. ToughMet alloy derives its low coefficient of friction from having a microscopically smooth surface that results in minimal wear. Because it resists wear, ToughMet alloy holds the as-installed clearance several times longer than other bearing materials.

In addition, the superior oxidation resistance of ToughMet alloy makes it less likely to blacken or tarnish, allowing heat to dissipate more quickly.

ToughMet alloy is just one material that improves automotive performance. See which alloy is the best fit for your powertrain needs.

WRAPPED BEARINGS MADE FROM TOUGHMET ALLOY

Bowman International Ltd. provides wrapped bearings made from strips of high-strength ToughMet alloy. The BowMet® product line features standard size, thin-walled wrapped bearings with all the benefits ToughMet alloys provide in machined bearings. See the BowMet catalog for more information about standard sizes. Custom sizes are also available.

AVAILABLE FORMS OF TOUGHMET ALLOYS

ToughMet alloy is available in plate, rod, tube, wire and a variety of cast shapes. Mechanical properties may vary by product size, form and temper. Please see our ToughMet data sheets for specific values. We can also supply rough or finish machined parts to meet customer supplied drawings.

IMPROVING ENGINE PERFORMANCE WHITE PAPER

Cosworth Engine Testing White Paper Front Page Image

We have just completed a new case study, “Dynamometer Testing of Combustion Chamber Component Materials Designed to Improve Efficiency While Maintaining Engine Performance and Durability.” Read it to see how components made from our specialty automotive alloys and composites stood up in accelerated durability testing at Cosworth U.K. After run times of 150 hours with 96 WOT, seats, guides, connecting rods, small-end bearings and pistons made of our materials showed no signs of wear or deformation.

ON-TRACK TESTING REPORT

We provided MXology, a maker of high-performance engine components for the off-road motorcycle industry, with our advanced alloys and composites so they could create parts to test. MXology designed and introduced parts made from ToughMet alloy and other materials into a motocross engine that was used on the track in real races. When results mattered, our materials delivered. You can review the complete report on the testing program to learn more about the gains found in performance and reliability.
