ULTRA 76 PLUS TANTALUM ALLOY PROVIDES SUPERIOR CORROSION RESISTANCE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

One of the rarest elements on earth, tantalum is used in both pure and alloy forms, but tantalum alloys offer higher strength and superior corrosion resistance, providing tangible results in challenging markets.

ULTRA 76 Plus tantalum alloy (Ta-2.5W-0.15Ru), formerly part of the H.C. Starck product line, is now available from Materion. This alloy offers significant improvements in corrosion resistance in hydrochloric and sulfuric acid applications (HCI and H2SO4 acids) at potentially higher temperatures and concentrations.

ULTRA 76 Plus provides multiple benefits for end users when compared to alternative materials, including longer equipment life, lower operating downtime and the ability to stand up to increased operating temperatures. With comparable mechanical properties to those of conventional tantalum alloys, ULTRA 76 Plus can be easily adopted to the same processing and fabrication techniques.

ULTRA 76 Plus alloy eliminates the need for separate “platinum spot welding” application steps to protect against hydrogen embrittlement and maintains all the excellent mechanical properties of NRC® 76. Hydrogen embrittlement is minimized, as hydrogen pickup is reduced by two magnitudes over standard NRC 76 material (up to 100 times lower in HCl acid and 10 times lower in H2SO4 acid).

A wider range of operating temperatures in both HCI and H2SO4 acids enables simplified fabrication and minimizes inconvenient repairs and production losses, ensuring reliable, long service-life.

MARKETS AND APPLICATIONS FOR ULTRA 76 PLUS TANTALUM ALLOY

The unique physical and chemical properties of ULTRA 76 Plus alloy give it the ability to support a broad range of markets and applications. The material is recommended for applications where tantalum’s physical properties are desired at a higher strength level and better corrosion resistance in HCI and H2SO4 acids than pure tantalum.
