Materion Supports ASMI Cleveland Chapter’s Materials Camp for Teachers
Materion was thanked as one of Cleveland area's corporate sponsors of ASM Internationals' Teachers Camp held at Beaumont High School in mid-July.
The camp is a proven program that strengthens the curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at the secondary level. The camp was an exciting event for local high school teachers attending as students and piqued their interest because they were given hands-on experience with different materials. Materials are also a very important and an integral part of the manufacturing process. For teachers, this was an excellent opportunity to re-visit science principles, do experiments and bring new lessons into the classroom.
During this one-week workshop, teacher participants learned the basics of Materials Science Technology (MST) as taught at the high school level. They worked with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites in order to develop a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials to modern life. The teachers saw how this heavily project-based course could motivate their students to learn science concepts as they completed projects of personal worth to them. For their participation, they received 4 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) or could have opted for 2 graduate level credits.
The camp was offered cost-free to the participants due in part to sponsorships of companies like Materion, which know that the material sciences are key to their success.
